Tower Exhibition

Saffron Craig - Friday, July 31, 2009
I was lucky enough to visit the "Toren" quilt group of the Netherlands-infamous for its artistic quilts. They host a bi-annual exhibition and every time they choose a different theme for their quilts. This time the group played with the theme light and dark all quilts were a uniformed size. To unite the group a piece of yellow, blue and red fabric should appear in their quilts. Furthermore they create a separate centre piece hanging down from the ceiling.

An inspiriting display of technique and style combined with interesting interpretations on the themes.

The exhibition is situated in the tower of Gouderee, which is so tall it can be seen form far far away. It is such beautiful room. Such is it, that taking a photo will never do justice to the exhibition but maybe it might leave you with an impression?

Smallest Quilt shop

Saffron Craig - Thursday, July 30, 2009
Yesterday we went to visit the little medieval town of Brielle on the next island. Oh the antique markets here in the Netherlands are great. I bought some old linen and hand embroidered pieces, inspired by my visit to Nicole. And this is the smallest quilt shop selling fabrics I have ever seen.

Nicole

Saffron Craig - Wednesday, July 29, 2009
Something very special today. The story goes I had a comment from Nicole on my blog one day. So I emailed her back after reading her fabulous blog and seemingly in a flash I was invited to her stylish four story house in Rotterdam chatting about design, etsy, websites, graphic design, children and embroidery patterns. Oh and eating her wonderful homemade Dutch apple cake. It's so great to meet fellow crafters.

I loved seeing her work interested to learn more about contemporary embroidery. A moment captured in the photos beneath. My pic from her sketch book which promises some great work yet to be published! Check out her etsy shop for her current patterns.

Thank you Nicole, this is sure to be one of the best days on this trip.

I'm wildly jealous! Such fun! Lucky you being able to look through that sketch book - I'll bet there are some treasures in there. Thanks for posting the great photos. :-D

On the bike

Saffron Craig - Sunday, July 26, 2009
Its fantastic to have your own road to ride your bike on. I am reminding myslef RIGHT side right side! We can ride next to each other and chat. Or I can tune into Sequoias' chatting and singing, humming on the back.

Peekaboo daddy! Opps Lost my head in this one! 30 kms later.

I am filling up on fries which are dipped in mayonnaise. Cheese and all the crackers are sweet. I have read a 1200 page book. Drawn, relaxed and had a fair bit of sleep.

Miss-sampsons drapery sent me an email this morning letting me know that she has sold out of all 9 designs of "my" fabrics at the Melbourne quilt show and has reordered them- which she would like urgently for the Canberra show. That made my day. It truly did.
Any thoughts?

It looks like you are having a fantastic holiday - you won't want to come home! I am very jealous of the afternoon tea that you're going to have with Nicole. Take photos! Congratulations on the fabric selling out - yay!

The Hague

Saffron Craig - Friday, July 24, 2009
I have visited the Hague a few times in the past. I like going there as Patrick has many child hood memories to share. I was amazed by the oil refineries on the drive there and the huge power plants. So I took a few snaps, it's 10.30 in the morning in fierce weather.

We managed to take a wrong turn and did a U-turn around one of those huge wind mills. It's like a scene from Dr Who.

We visited the Gemeente Museum art gallery, devoted to 20th art, particularly de Stijl, with a strict no camera no nothing attitude. Not even mushrooms in the mushroom soup. So not much to say there! Well there was some yummy paintings and the curator is inspired modern juxtaposed to old, colours and objects. Klee still my favourite oh and Egon Schiele is so amazing.

Then we went for a wander along the canals and stopped by a few shops. I searched out a quilt shop —  Quilters Palet — which was brimming with people eager to buy their fabrics. We left some fabric samples and had a chat to Evy, one of the owners. It is a beautiful building inside and the big Dutch windows give it lots of natural light.

When I realized I had been standing and walking for 5 hours we sat down in the nearest cafe and relaxed with a Cappucino, which in Holland means a very strong cuppa with a bit of frothy milk on top. And thanks for the free maccaroon.

Tea towel

Saffron Craig - Thursday, July 23, 2009
As I was buying this tea towel from the windmill shop the "meid" selling it explained how she had collaborated with the textile museum to create it. Locally woven in Tilburg. Very special. I hope that we have it for a long time. The last very special tea towel I bought went up in flames on the new gas stove which gave us a laugh.

The windwill is still making flour. So the shop had some lovely goodies for sale.

Tilburg

Saffron Craig - Wednesday, July 22, 2009
In Tilburg, at the National textile museum of the Netherlands we had a lot to take in.

Today I watched a tapestry being made. The colours in the tapestry were absolutely fantastic. This is the actual size of the oil painting which is driving the tapestry. The crafstman copies not just the colours and pattern but also the thickness of the paint layers, so the tapestry is deliberately as uneven as the painting.

I am not one to hold myself back from stroking hand made objects - so I did. I had permission and it felt wonderful.

A close up of the surface.

The actual tapestry will take 18 months to complete.

The featured exhibition of designers Niels van Eijk en Miriam van der Lubbe  had some very cool design objects, very diverse designers these two. As both designers were our age  we were really inspired by them.

This room is showing their design sketches. An entire room of dioramas and ideas. Its great to look at how design is resolved, from the thought to the finished concepts, especially the finished part.

This last picture is inside the work room. The machines at work and some of the finished pieces.

Then we went shopping oh what fun I had buying gifts for my wonderful friends.

The museum looks awesome and the tapestry is so impressive!

Bike riding

Saffron Craig - Tuesday, July 21, 2009
A day enjoyed on a bike, riding around the Island of Zeeland through fields and forest then back along the dijk. Holland is so flat the wind rips through the fields around us. Thankfully we had a tail wind on the way home so I felt like a bird.

While at home in Australia Kathryn is heading down to Melbourne to show the ranges to shops there. The stitches and craft show is on this week in Melbourne. Sure to be an inspiring event running from the 23  to the 26 July, 2009.

Aylie, a friend for some 20 years, is busy with our online shop. Thanks Aylie,  I am very grateful.

Little town

Saffron Craig - Monday, July 20, 2009
We went to visit a "little town today" and when we got there Sequoia exclaimed "but everything is BIG!"
Woudrichem is a medieval fort protected by a ring wall and water. It is charming.

I wanted to show the "Quilt Speciaalzaak" our fabrics, this shop in the center of town is a real treat.

The fabrics below which I photographed in the shop represent a history of Dutch textiles. Den Haan en Wagenmakers fabric are based on antique Dutch manuscripts that were designed by Rudolf den Haan and printed in The Netherlands. I love the Indian inspiration.

And this is the view of the town with the usual cathedral in the middle.
We also found a little curiosity shop called "old love" that spanned over 4 tiny floors with the smallest of steps. When Sequoia hit the attic she thought she was in heaven as it was stacked with old toys...

Holland

Saffron Craig - Sunday, July 19, 2009
Australia is a long way away now. We are in full summer here in Holland- and it feels great. We are staying with Patrick's parents- Daphney and Jans' where we will be for two weeks. The first photo is taken from the window where I am sitting, it shows the park 20 meters away. The church bell rings on the hour which is something new for me.
The picture underneath depicts the view from our bedroom. It is  one section of the garden. We can eat the plums and the apples.
This country is so flat so it is excellent for bike riding, I have been on the bike many times already. It is really lovely here. I will take my camera further tomorrow.

Daphney and Jans' lush garden.

This is one side of Daphneys' work room- her studio. I love looking at peoples workspace. Her cat is a regular feature.

Hi Saffron, I love seeing peoples workspaces too. I have a cat that looks just like that, but she chews on everything plastic (including expensive doll hands) so unfortunately she lives outside. I'm going to be posting pictures of my workspace next Monday (27th of July). :) Missy
