Painting And Embroidery

Posted on November 16, 2015 by Saffron Craig | 0 comments
I did a tiny painting and added some carefree embroidery to it. Bright colours and circles, a tiny bit abstract. It's fun to create with out thinking, adding where experience leads.
I hope that you are being creative as well? I hope that your world is lovely?

Hand Painting Fabric

Posted on September 30, 2015 by Saffron Craig | 0 comments

In my studio this week I have been experimenting even more with hand painting on fabric. I'm enjoying exploring shades of pinks and purples. There is something so relaxing about playing with colour—watching as my brushstrokes delicately and now confidently add colours and shapes to fabric. I'm using soft bamboo brushes that I bought in China 10 years ago.

I'm Back

Posted on September 10, 2015 by Saffron Craig | 0 comments

I'm Back! It’s been a while since I blogged...12 months. I’ve missed blogging! Especially being able to communicate with like minded people. Thanks to those of you who encouraged me with emails and texts and other words of inspiration to get me back into blogging. I've got loads to share so better get over my shyness.

Last weekend we drove down to The Canberra Contemporary Craft Retreat. I was there last year and it was awesome to go again. I had a workshop full of talented and enthusiastic students who created sensational fabrics. All so very different!

It was great to escape Sydney as Canberra is just so beautiful this time of the year, the bush was yellow with wattle. Beautiful.

It was great to see an Owl pop up in my class, I'm still very fond of Owls. This one is in turquoise and I think it has a lot of attitude with the buttons and bowtie.

Ocean elements and colours in this fabulous print. Destined as placemats and a table runner. In the real this like most this fabric is even more sensational.

Like minded Lisa created a fabric full of whimsy and child like motives which as you know is close to my heart. (Never to many love hearts!)

Yes we had a fantastic day in Canberra. Time flew for us all.

I will be back at the Canberra Contemporary Craft Retreat for 2016.

Berry Quilting Retreat 2014

Posted on September 03, 2014 by Saffron Craig | 0 comments

Elizabeth Dubbelde of Berry Patchwork Shop and her amazing team organize an annual Quilting Retreat in Berry NSW. Liz also organises a wonderful Berry Quilt Show along with two quilting prises. With all proceeds from the Berry Quilt Show going to local children's charity.

The retreat encourages quilters from all around Australia to come together in beautiful historic Berry.

I was a tutor at this years retreat. I had a very talented and willing class, who all seemed to love taking up the challenge to create their own original fabrics from scratch. The days flew by, time was told as Elizabeth brought delicious morning tea, lunch and then afternoon tea to our pavilion.

On Sunday each student created a quilt or sewn item. 5 quilt tops were finished. They really were beautiful.

I was super busy though I managed to take a few photos with my SLR hoping to capture some moments. The individuality of each person shines in the fabrics they created.

I enjoyed teaching enormously and was thrilled with what was created thanks to all who came along.

At the end of the two busy and stimulating days we had a show and tell in the quilt display so we could see what all the other classes with cleaver tutors had created.

It was really was a fabulous weekend.

Children's Workshop - How To Sew A Softie

Posted on August 01, 2014 by Saffron Craig | 0 comments

Recently I taught 25 children, a few adults and a grandparent to hand sew. Concentration was high for all the children and there was much excitement as each step was taken and concluded. Cutting the softie panels out. Sewing them together by hand with a sharp needle and white tread which was rethreaded at least three times per softie, each child managed this easily. Then the joy of turning them inside out and stuffing them. Sewing the softies closed was tricky for most and I had a queue of children asking for help.

Their was the odd hole where the hand sewn stitches were a bit large and the stuffing oozed out (which cracked me up). But nothing a few quick stitches wouldn't fix.

Every child left with a softie and a massive smile. Most gave them a cute name and a cuddle. As I was super busy I asked my daughter to take some pictures on my phone.

You may be surprised, but children are excellent at sewing. I would encourage you to teach a child to sew.

Western Australia—Working and Adventuring

Posted on April 29, 2014 by Saffron Craig | 1 comment

Yesterday I returned from two weeks in WA, visiting Perth and the Margret River Region. Which is close to three weeks of traveling for me. During this time I met so many amazing women through the workshop I taught, it has been brilliant and humbling for me to be able to connect. It's just what I hoped I would be doing this year—getting out of my studio to meet like minded people, though it has been so much more than that. I have been shown so much kindness, seen how other artist live and work, walked in beautiful places that I needed to be invited into to be able to see and I really have learnt so much about life and living. Thanks Skidamarink ( I love you ) and Hot Possum, and Yvette Fraser for hosting me on my travels. I've learnt so much from you all. A huge thanks to all of you for coming along it would not have been possible without you.

In Margaret River I was lucky enough to eat from permaculture gardens, watch surfers on 5 meter waves, enjoy the sunset its so unusual for me to watch the sun dip over the ocean horizon leaving liquid fluorescent pink light in it's trail. I was invited to a surprise 40th birthday party in the middle of the bush with a lamb on the spit and a sky full of stars, red wine and a huge bonfire with a live band entertaining us all which made for a special memory. I also went to the local car races and was thrilled at the speed the cars flew around the red clay track and afterwards chatted to the fearless drivers. Perhaps to be a fabric design in the future.

I also enjoyed quality time with my younger Sister and her three children. We were certainly busy walking over sand dunes, catching waves, visiting local attractions and eating, so much eating.

While I was there Margaret River Regions Opens studio was on—so lucky me I was able to visit local artists, chat to them about their practice. To be in their creative spaces was incredibly inspiring for me. It's on for a bit longer so if you are in the area do pop in to see them. My Favourite Studio space was from Diana Burns who has the most amazing studio set in pristine bush, her watercolours are truly beautiful. Another favourite Studio space and textile artist was Rivers of Silk.  Just beautiful.

Teaching is so rewarding look what was created in a day. I was busy offering up advice, mixing colours and answering questions.

Wonderful fabric created by local artist Diana Burns.

Perth Fabric Design and Screen Printing Workshop With Hot Possum

Denise from Hot Possum picked us up from Perth airport, drove us to her home and looked after as so kindly for our stay in Perth. She created amazing fabrics and her enthusiasm positively effected us all. She is such a talent. Pop over to her website her patterns and her fabric choices are fantastic.

I'm sure I'll return to my kind of normality soon? But it's bound to be a different one after all my experiences and all the inspirations I found there. I thought I might start by sitting at my IMac and writing about my journey. But I kinda just want to book my return visit.

Roz is a master with a hook and her crochet is amazing. She teaches classes weekly in her cottage.

At the end of my wonderful time in Bendigo right before Roz drove me to the train station I helped her to yarn bomb her Rav.

I think it looks amazing. Keep an eye out for it if you are in Bendigo.

Thanks to all who came along and made the Workshops in Bendigo such a memorable time for us all. A huge thanks to Roz who has a heart of gold and put together all three workshops for me.

Skidamarink.

Please contact Roz here for her craft groups, you will meet amazing people and have a ball.

Next stop for me is Margaret River.

Please do leave a comment. I love hearing from you.
